Time Well Spent

This program has truly transformed my way of thinking when it comes to the Early Childhood Education field. I am blown away by so many things I have learned. One thing I will continue to carry with me is the quote "You can't wait 'till you know enough"- Julie Olsen Edwards. I am have talked about his quote in discussions and my speech. So often we get caught up thinking we cannot do something simply because we knowledge. While that does hold some truth you will never know everything about everything. Take what you know and build on that go towards your dream. Second thing I learned is about to research. My skills aren't top notch but I believe I am well on my way. The topic of better wages for preschool teachers is not a topic that is right in front of you, it was something I truly had to dig for more and more. I used to dread doing research but now it is something I learned to respect greatly. Lastly, I learned during this program to never stop asking questions. I will ask more going forward.

A long-term goal I have for myself let's say in the next five years is opening a school where I make the rules!

To my colleagues, I have been with some of you all since our Foundations course and it was always exciting to see you all in the next classes! I have learned about you guys and truly wish you all the best in you endeavors! To Dr. E, you have been by far the most influential professor I have had! You have challenged me and encouraged me! Keep giving shout outs because the week I got one made a difference in how I approached my writing from then on. It gave me an extra boost at the right time! It was like you celebrated a win for me and that meant a lot!

Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: National/Federal Level

"The National Association for the Education of Young Children is a professional membership organization that works to promote high-quality early learning for all young children, birth through age 8, by connecting early childhood practice, policy and research. We advance a diverse, dynamic early childhood profession and support all who care for, educate, and work on behalf of young children." (NAEYC)

I could not find job opportunities for NAEYC.

Zero to Three is an organization that is geared towards starting children in their learning experience as early as infant age.

"Our mission is to ensure that all babies and toddlers have a strong start in life. At ZERO TO THREE, we envision a society that has the knowledge and will to support all infants and toddlers in reaching their full potential." (Zero to Three)

The job opportunity that interested me is the Marketing Specialist position. The summary of the position is as follows:

"ZERO TO THREE is seeking a Marketing Specialist to assist with the implementation and evaluation of marketing campaigns to drive sales and engagement with ZERO TO THREE’s membership, products, events, and services. The ideal candidate is someone who has an entrepreneurial spirit and is passionate about using his/her marketing skills and experience to contribute to an important mission." (Zero to Three)

Job Duties:
Conducts marketing campaigns, including writing and laying out emails, updating web content, and analyzing results.
Develops and maintains schedules for marketing campaigns. Monitors internal and external activities to achieve maximum impact from campaigns.
Implements traditional and digital membership acquisition, engagement and retention marketing campaigns to meet program goals and maximize revenue.
Supports all aspects of planning, writing, coordinating graphics, and distributing a wide variety of promotional materials for programs, products, and events.

While I may not have all the experience, Zero to Three's vision is one I can get behind. I believe if you have the same passion and a team has the same goal, anything can be accomplished. If did get this position I would have to learn a lot! I think it would certainly be worth it because I get to draw people in and get them on board through marketing.

Last is the Children's Defense Fund

"The Children’s Defense Fund Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities." (Children's Defense Fund)

I love that this organization is targeting children who if they didn't have anybody fighting for them they would not receive what they need for success at the beginning. A strong start is important for children. They did have job opportunities but none I was interested in.

Exploring Roles in the ECE Community: Local and State Levels

TAEYC Tennessee Association for the Education of Young Children

TAEYC exists to provide members with professional development opportunities and to advocate for best practice in the care, development, and education of all Tennessee’s young children.

I chose TAEYC because it reminds of NAEYC which is my favorite organization. TAEYC values struck me because it is an acronym for the word CHILDREN.

Collaboration with all members of the community

  High performing organizational strategies

Inclusive environments for all children and adults

Leadership in child advocacy and public policy

Diversity in the early childhood community

Relationships with children and their families

Early care and education professionals who use best practices

  National, regional and local alliances

This organization reminds us that children are at the core of whatever we do. We do it all the betterment of children everywhere.

Tennessee Head Start Association

Tennessee's Head Start programs serve more than 20,000 children and their families every year with comprehensive education, social and health programs for children, plus programs for family and community development. One or more Head Start classrooms are operated by government, private, faith-based and charitable organizations in nearly every county in the state. In all, Head Start operates almost a thousand classrooms in nearly 350 pre-school centers staffed by loving, well-trained teachers, more than 80% of whom hold a college degree.

Head Start is aimed specifically at high-risk children, typically those from low-income families in which parents are out of a job or are working, single parents. Head Start also targets children in homeless families, children in foster care, as well as children with disabilities. (Tennessee Head Start Association)

What struck me with this program is the health screenings given to the children. We know how important health is at such a young age and with these families being in low-income communities, health risk is higher.

I looked at job positions for this organization and they are currently seeking an Executive Director for the TN Public Health Association.

The requires and desired qualifications are as listed:

Possess a Bachelor’s degree in public health, public administration, health administration or related field.

·         A minimum of 5 years professional experience

·         Excellent communicationand computer skills, (Access, Excel, Word, QuickBooks)

QUALIFICATIONS: Desired:

·         Possess a Master’s degree in public health or related field.

·         Professional experience with the Tennessee Department of Health

·         Experience with the legislative process; registered or willing to become a registered lobbyist

·         Experience working with contracts

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Directors for the overall management of the Tennessee Public Health Association (TPHA) and for the general administration of the Association.  The Executive Director facilitates the work of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee by coordinating meetings, assisting committees, and providing periodic reports and recommendations.

In coordination with committee chairs, the Executive Director oversees the development, planning and implementation of the Annual Conference in the fall, three spring meetings, and other events designed to serve the membership of TPHA.  Assembles and disseminates quarterly newsletters to membership, oversees the organization’s website, and works with staff to see that membership information and member registration remains current. Develops and maintains partnerships between TPHA with other partner organizations, associations and universities. Profile of a Volunteer

I have decided to elect my friend, Deyuanna a.k.a Dee. Dee volunteers in a number ways especially at church which is where we met. She volunteers on media  (camera person), Feed Memphis, which is a volunteer effort at my church where we have volunteers pack and hand out food bags to children in low-income areas and on a team called Connections. Not only does she volunteer at church she helps her friend with her start up boutique of clothing by helping in any way she kind. She is super kind, sweet, dependable, and flexible. She is willing to do anything within her means to help others especially the ones she loves. She has no idea I feel this way so I may have to share this with her. To me she personifies what it means to be a servant, a cheerful giver and real friend. I admire her so much and very thankful to have her in my life!

Using Social Media to Get Connected

My experience with social media has been pleasant. I don't have any negative insights or experiences using social media. I am very careful about who I follow and what is presented on my timelines. As far as advocacy I would use all social media outlets. My favorite social media is Instagram. People are always caught by what they see first. If I can find images that are eye catching with sayings, quotes, stats that are powerful about my advocacy effort then I could draw in people. Social media could definitely be a driving force for a lot of advocacy efforts.

Advocacy Messages

When I first saw this image and the quote it really caught my eye. To say a child is the spitting image of his mother and you see the picture of a child with a black eye it is very sad. Of course not only is the child a victim of abuse but so is his mother. This ad would make me more observant of my students and their families.

In small print on this ad it is written that, "one of seven children in the world have access to clean water". That number was staggering. When first looking at this ad and the child the world poverty struck me the most because I feel that is what and who we are dealing with the most. The people who have the least of things and trying to grant them access the high quality early learning experiences, not just for children but the entire family. Even with our country being success poverty is something that is still very high in the U.S and like the ad said it is a tough pill swallow. This image should inspire us to fight harder for children in situations that are similar to this. It should do something to our hearts to want to help.

My Own Capacity

Which issues impacting young children and their families and/or the field of early childhood fuel your passion?

The issue that fuels my passion is the retention of early learning professional due to compensation. I hate hearing the high turnover rates for preschools and the ways it effects children and families.  A big is with turnover of compensation or lack their of.

What knowledge, skills, dispositions, and/or talents do you possess that will contribute to your advocacy work?

Well, by me earning this degree I have learned so many ways to research issues and what to do to advocate for this issue. With insight into different cites and ways to get involved I can be of some assistance. While I still have a lot learn I know I am on the right track to being a strong advocate.

In what ways do you hope to grow in order to be a more effective advocate?

I hope to grow in knowledge and strength to press on in times when it may seem like what I am trying to do is impossible. Trying to push for a policy is no easy feat.

My Role as an Advocate

Honestly, my intent was not to advocate for children. I believe children have a number of people advocating for them and could definitely use more however, I have been drawn to advocate for early learning teachers. Preschool teachers seem to have a bad rep. People are constantly thinking all we do is babysit all day when that is clearly not the case. With there being a rise of high quality preschools, more school are requiring that teachers have a degree, certification or license.

In this case it is essential that we acknowledge the issues on all levels when it comes to the education of our educators. You cannot properly teach children if you do understand what developmental stages they are at currently and you cannot properly guide them going forward if you do not understand what is expected of them in the next class. With this knowledge comes education. Which is why continued education is important. Even teachers who have been in the field 10 plus years needs a refresher , a reboot because as times change so does how children learn change.

Even though I am discussing advocating for teachers this is still an issue concerning the well-being of children. If I were to become a community leader I would express the importance of an early learning teacher and roles that teacher plays throughout the day to care for a child, teach a child and so on. I would express the importance of early learning and how great of impact early learning has in the life a child. I would take the time as a community leader to  understand my audience.

The communities that suffer most is lower-income communities. I could express them all day long, the importance of early learning teachers and what they deserve but some would ask at the end of my spill what would it mean in cost for them for children to attend high-quality preschools. As we know hiring teachers with degrees and so on could be added on cost in tuition fees. I would begin to seek sponsors, partners, people willing to donate annually etc. Paying teachers should not be the job of the parents.

Being a leader in any forum takes thick skin and understanding that a no, isn't always a no and a set back doesn't mean you have to quick. As long as we have children in this world then we have a reason to advocate, to fight. As long as we have people that want to teach our little ones, love on them while mom and dads make a living then again we have a reason to advocate, fight. Leaders must press on.

Personal Advocacy Reflection

I don't have so much as a story of how I helped someone advocate for me or even someone being close to me being advocated for. However, now learning more about advocacy I wish I would have had someone advocating for me when I was younger. When I was younger I was sexually abused and I had to go through courts, custody, judges etc. I feel like people did the bare minimum even though I was removed from the situation but it was basically my choice because of lack of evidence. Now learning about the lengths advocates go to to ensure a child's safety and well being and even that justice is served, I wish I would have had an advocate. Someone who understood the severity and who wouldn't give up the fight so easily. Advocates are truly essential and working in this field I get to become the person I wanted when I was younger.

Advocacy

This quote is pretty self explanatory. If we don't care a whole lot about what we are doing then there won't be change.

When I Reflect About My Collegial, Professional Learning Community

Being apart of this learning community has definitely been different from what I have experienced in the past courses. Having a smaller classes presents a different challenge as far as accountability. Definitely felt a little more pressure to do assignments better and be on time, which is a great thing. I have enjoyed reading posts and gaining other insights from you wonderful ladies. One goal I have is to continue to do more research and ask more questions. As time is coming near to the end of this program another goal is to take advantage of the awesome resources Walden offers!

It has been a pleasure these past eight weeks with you ladies! I wish you both the best going forward and hope to see in other courses!

My Hypothetical Family Situation

I am married. My husband and I have opted for adoption of a toddler. The toddler is a boy and is deaf. My husband works as a fireman and I own a preschool. I guess you could say middle class would be our socioeconomic status. Neither I or my husband come from super well-off families. We had to make to decision about the kind of life we wanted and we went from their pursuing what was in our hearts. English is our primary language. Childcare will be available as I am an owner of a preschool and there will be professionals there that can work with my toddler on his sign language in the classroom as well as teach other children sign language.  Considering the comprehensive systems I would have to say that Health and Family Leadership and Support would benefit my child now and in the future.  With my toddler being deaf there will have to be serious observations done to make sure he is hitting milestones. I don’t want his impairment to limit, which I don’t believe it will but rather use it as an advantage.

The Political Will to Improve Early Childhood Systems

What I have learned this week that early learning advocate research is so beyond the surface level. Advocates go to greats lengths such as starting initiatives and/or being apart of them, getting involved in local politics, attending important meetings that concern early learning. It is definitely a lot. What has appealed to me is the different ways that we can get involved even if we aren't advocates. On a lot of the cites there are ways to see how to help or get involved and simply just connecting and sending emails. I see advocates as those reporters that report from the scene. We have such an advantage because we see first hand what the issues are and also have the access to get the issue to important people that can make a change.

Parent, Family and Community Engagement

Going to the website I was immediately drown to the "Moms Speak Out" posts. One mom's quote "Head Start is an awesome program to be in". (Parent and Family Stores, 2015) In her interview she stated, " My advocate, Laney Carvolial, she's helped me through a lot with sufficient housing, getting me the correct resources I needed to get to get to where I need to be, to build -- build stability in my household, shelter, food, necessities. It's just been really touching to be in the program and get the resources when you need it." How awesome is that for a parent to have access to resources needed through an advocate. As advocates our job is to look after the well-being of the child and families. When families are stressed about food, homes, work etc., it can be hard to be there fully for a child. As an advocate we get impact families in such positive way. Major props to this advocate. She has changed this woman's life.

Parent involvement is essential in Head Start programs or any early learning program. It keeps a consistency between school and home that helps children develop in a positive way.

Quality Programs for All Children

Currently the conversation about providing quality preschool education is becoming more popular and public. Concerns are rising as we see that low incomes children may not be performing as well academically and that could stem from not having early learning education or even not have quality early learning education. With parents working much more, “daycares”  are changing gears towards early learning education and not just babysitting. Preschools are prepping children for grade school by incorporating more academics in the schools. “ According to some studies, children enrolled in these programs are more behaved and have higher IQ scores upon enrolling kindergarten than their peers without formal education. Likewise, it was shown that children enrolled in Head Start programs learned quicker than children not enrolled in these programs.” (Education Corner) While some parents definitely feel they could handle homeschooling, not all parents can or even have the time to do it. Especially considering a single-parent homes are becoming way more common.

From my personal experience, I believe preschool is a great tool and is effective if executed properly. I love teaching the little ones. However, I have an on-going debate in my head about whether I would actually put my children in preschool or not when I do have them. I would definitely for social reasons. Children need to be around children their age and learn from them as well as how to learn social behaviors.

Early learning is such rapidly growing field. It changes with each generation because each generation learning differently. I believe two things will happen over the next 5-10 years. I believe the technology in preschools will advance beyond my imagination. Children will have more access to smart boards, tablets but won’t be completely desensitized because they will still be learning and interacting with teacher and students. I also believe there will be a surge of families of who choose homeschooling as an option. I know I have talked to some women my age and they are homeschooling, being stay-at-home moms, etc. With these two possible changes it will be imperative to have a more qualified staff with an educational background in early learning and on-going training for staff. Thus, could possibly increase compensation for teachers across the board.

What Resonates With You About Early Childhood Public Policy and Advocacy?

Why did you choose this specialization? Share what resonates with you about this specialization. Consider the relationship between your passion and aspirations related to public policy and advocacy and what you hope to accomplish with regard to promoting the well-being of children, families, and the early childhood field.

I changed my concentration to Public Policy and Advocacy just last year. Something came over and I decided I wanted to be more than teacher, more than a director and even more than just an owner of a preschool. I actually had a strong desire to advocate for preschool teachers. How often do we hear that preschool teachers are just babysitters? I get very upset when I hear that because people who have never worked in early learning have no clue what preschool teachers must do in order to help children develop motor skills, social skills and other developmental areas. Preschool teachers take on a lot and do not receive their due compensation. It boggles my mind when I see that preschool teachers are one the lowest paying jobs yet scores high in job satisfactory. So these teachers love their jobs yet they don't get paid enough for all that they do? Not only that, what about teachers who go the extra mile and receive their bachelors, masters or any other post secondary education in the field and still aren't compensated properly for that? Those teachers should not be paid hourly! I am still doing a good amount of research on this and there will be a change. With schools becoming high quality they are now requiring teachers to have a bachelor's degree or some sort of post secondary education.

Part 2: Why are advocates essential in the early childhood field? Explain why you believe becoming a skilled and confident advocate is crucial for early childhood professionals and for the field.

Advocates are essential because they play a role in the political aspects of early learning. While preschool teachers wear a number of hats and it can be quite difficult to add the role of an advocate to their list of job duties. Advocates in early learning are our champions for families who don't have voice and/or the resources that families may not be aware of to able to provide high quality early learning for their children.

Part 3: What do you hope to learn about public policy and advocacy? Articulate at least three goals related to this specialization at this point in your coursework.

I hope to learn more about how to research and deliver what I have learned to be of better assistance to the school, families and communities I serve and work.
