Personal Advocacy Reflection

I don't have so much as a story of how I helped someone advocate for me or even someone being close to me being advocated for. However, now learning more about advocacy I wish I would have had someone advocating for me when I was younger. When I was younger I was sexually abused and I had to go through courts, custody, judges etc. I feel like people did the bare minimum even though I was removed from the situation but it was basically my choice because of lack of evidence. Now learning about the lengths advocates go to to ensure a child's safety and well being and even that justice is served, I wish I would have had an advocate. Someone who understood the severity and who wouldn't give up the fight so easily. Advocates are truly essential and working in this field I get to become the person I wanted when I was younger.

  1. Quintina,
I am so sorry that you experienced abuse and that you didn't have an advocate fighting for your best interests as a child. You are right- no child deserves to be dismissed after having such an awful thing happen to them. You deserved not only to be safe, but to feel taken care of and to receive counseling and tertiary care. I am so glad that you have put a positive spin on what happened to you and are becoming the advocate you deserved as a young girl. That takes a lot of courage and compassion. Your story is very inspiring! Thank you for being brave enough to share it.

  2. Hi Quintina,
I commend you for sharing your story and my heart breaks that you were left to work through so much on your own. Advocates have to be willing to go hard for children and doing all they can to make sure they are able to have the opportunity to heal from abuse and trauma. You are definitely a survivor and have so much to offer to the children and families that you advocate for

  3. Hi Qunitina I came to your blog to see if you posted week 3's work, and I read your story. I can relate to how you must have felt. I was raped as a child, and my mother was my advocate. My heart goes out to you.
